Google Acquired the Pittpatt for facial recognition improvements

Google has just acquired the Pittpatt ( Pittsburgh Pattern Recognition ), a successful facial recognition start up. After this acquisiton, Google possibly aims to speed improvements related to face recognition and add new features to Picassa, Youtube and Google plus.

Google released the following official statement about the acquisition:
The Pittsburgh Pattern Recognition team has developed innovative technology in the area of pattern recognition and computer vision. We think their research and technology can benefit our users in many ways, and we look forward to working with them.”

Pittpatt is not the first and of course not the last company acquired by Google. Google acquired more than 100 companies since 2001 and 16 companies in 2011, according to a wikipedia article .

Here is the list of companies Google has acquired in 2011 so far: [1]
